The night marked the official start of the holiday season with a crowd countdown to Mayor Michael Hancock flipping the switch to turn on the lights for the first time!

The Excel Institute Special Youth Choral and the Denver Gay Men's Chorus joined 9NEWS in the festivities as well as Old St. Nick who was there for photo opportunities.

After Friday, the lights turn on every night at 5:45 p.m. and are programmed to turn off at 10:45 p.m. through Jan. 25.
